General Packet Radio Service which is commonly known as GPRS is another boon of modern technology. In the age when everything moves furiously fast and people can’t do without mobiles and internet GPRS is another way to stay connected anywhere, anytime.
GPRS is an updated mobile data provided to the GSM cellular network. The users are provided with packet data service that is something similar to the World Wide Web by the means of the digital GSM radio network. The voice circuit transmits the speech between the cellular device and the nearby GSM transceiver station on a safe 14kbps radio link that is digital. It is beneficial because you can use the GPRS service while on the move since it is just the base station that is shifted from one to another without any hassle by the GSM system.
The main reasons for using GPRS are internet related like sending and receiving emails, browsing the net, transfer data to a connected computer and even for telemetry services. The way to get connected is
• Dial the service just the way you dial a data call though in this case there is no phone number.
• An IP address is given after the user is attached.
• The setting is done and the data flow from and to the internet is carried out.
• You can carry on with your work until you are disconnected by the network due to congestion or some other problem.
• You can manually un – attach yourself after you are done with your work.
You can also connect your GPRS activated to your computer or laptop by using Infrared, Bluetooth or a data cable. GPRS cards are also available in the market but they have a few disadvantages along with the benefits like:
• They drain the battery life of your mobile phone.
• These data cards have their own SIM cards. So, you will need another subscription to your cellular network.
• They work better in laptops than desktops.
GPRS can be used while you are on roaming but the choice is limited. You can’t expect this service in many countries since work is still being done to set up roaming agreements. So, you can opt from the Local Network Roaming or the Home Network Roaming.
But before you connect your cellular device with GPRS, a few points to be kept in mind are:
• The battery life of your phone will be reduced.
• GPRS will not stop you from receiving or making voice calls.
• The data session is usually suspended when you are attending a call.
